Don’t forget about Purdue’s 4-3-2-1-Graduate initiative:

4 – Graduate in four years

3 – Maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average

2 – Study two hours for every hour spent in a classroom

1 – Make one leadership commitment

If you stay on top of your studies the 4-3-2 should be easy enough, but the only way to make one leadership commitment is to get involved.

Need some major hair care?

If you’re anything like me, my hair gets beyond dry in the winter; not to mention that it gains static and my color also begins to look dull.

For all your hair care needs, I highly recommend visiting Eclectic Hair Salon located in West Lafayette.

For day to day hair care, I found a perfect product at the salon called ‘Smooth Perfection Style + Care Infusion’. It is a two in one serum and leave in conditioner. It offers 72 hours of frizz protection, maximizes color vibrancy and works as a leave in conditioner.

Not only does Eclectic Hair Salon have beneficial hair care products but they also offer many services including: haircut, hairstyle, color, and highlights, but their best service for solving winter hair dullness is the smoothing hair treatment. This is their website’s definition of their smoothing hair treatment:

“For people with curly, wavy or straight hair – our smoothing hair treatments relax and improve the overall health of your hair. Our hair smoothing treatments are keratin enriched to straighten and smooth out your hair for eight weeks. This indulgent formula will strengthen and smooth out your hair’s cuticles.”

I trust Eclectic with all my hair care needs. If you feel you need a new product, color, or smoothing treatment. Check them out and you can make an appointment here.

Make your next study spot a coffee shop instead of the library

Coffee shops give you easy access to caffeine, ambient noise and warm lighting which are all the tools you need for studying success.

I found an article from an online publication called Spoon University. This article discusses how science proves coffee shops are better than libraries:

This article sparked an idea to write a blog post on a few cute coffee shops in the West Lafayette- Lafayette area. You know, aside from the typical Starbucks location.

  1. Star City Coffee & Ale House

Located in Downtown Lafayette, Star City is a cute place to get away and study. It’s small but cozy with some amazing bakery items to choose from.

2. Literato Cafe

It is located on Northwestern Ave in West Lafayette. Not only is it a great study spot, but they offer such amazing food. Their fig and pear pizza is delicious.

3. Greyhouse Coffee & Supply Co.

This one is my personal favorite. It is located right on Northwestern & State in West Lafayette making it an ideal location for Purdue students. They have gelato, crepes, macaroons, and tons of coffee and tea options. Not to mention, Greyhouse has the most inviting atmosphere.

If you need to hit the books, try one of these unique coffee shops instead of choosing your typical library spot. You might just find that you’re even more productive than normal; plus it’s an excuse to treat yourself to your favorite latte.

Have an amazing weekend!

But what do we really know about sleep?

If you’re a college student, you definitely have the studying and social life aspect of your life figured out, but what about sleep? Achieving a great night’s sleep is needed to function properly and reach that desperately desired GPA; not to mention it has you feel energized and ready to take on the day.

It is a constant subject of discussion amongst college students. I hear all the time: “Yeah I’ll go out. I’ll sleep when I’m dead” “I’m so exhausted” “I barely got any sleep last night” “I can’t wait to leave this class so I can go home and nap” “Sleep is for the weak”. With that being said, I did a little research and thought it’s be fun to share a few facts about sleep you might not know:

+ During sleep, your brain recharges and your cells repair themselves.

+ We require different amounts of sleep based on our age:

  • Under 3: 16 hours
  • 3- 18: 10 hours
  • 19- 65: 8 hours
  • Over 65: 6 hours

+ Men dream about other men 70% of the time; whereas women dream about men and women equally.

+ We can only dream about faces we’ve already seen.

+ People who do not dream generally have personality disorders.

+ Koalas sleep 22 hours a day; whereas Giraffes sleep less than 2 hours a day in 5- 10 minute sessions.

+ You will die from sleep deprivation before food deprivation.

+ Within 5 minutes of waking up half of your dream is forgotten and within 10 minutes 90% is forgotten.

To read a few more fun facts, check out Lifehack’s article here.

Now that you know some unique facts you can share these with your friends and classmates. Enjoy your dreams before you can’t remember them anymore and make sure to get in your needed 8 hours a night. Have a great rest of your week!

Valentine’s Day Date Night In

On Valentine’s Day, restaurants can get booked up pretty quickly, so whether you need a last minute date night idea or you are looking to create a cozy date night in – this is the post for you!

I purchased everything at West Lafayette’s Fresh City Market and only used 4 ingredients:

  • Hersey’s Kisses ($2.09)
  • Nestle Semi-Sweet Morsels ($2.29)
  • Raspberries (2 for $9.98)
  • Sushi (2 for $19.98)

It all cost just over 34 dollars to a create a cute at home dinner and desert for you and your Valentine. Plus, there are plenty of left over Kisses and Morsels to use again another time!

Fresh City Market has amazing sushi that tastes fresh as if you bought it at a pricy restaurant; however, it is less than 10 dollars a roll. This sushi creates a fancy dinner feel without breaking the wallet and without wasting any time.

The best part about this date night is it’s quick. All the ingredients for this dinner are already made, which means you can easily grab and go. As college students, many of us are very busy and either don’t have time to cook an extravagant meal or maybe even forget to make a dinner reservation. That’s when this DIY Valentine’s Date night is perfect.

Simply plate the sushi, put the chocolate morsels inside the raspberries, sprinkle the Hersey’s Kisses around the table, light a candle, and just like that the date night is complete.

Pour a drink for you and your Valentine and you are ready to enjoy the evening.

Happy Valentine’s Day! xoxo

Better than chocolate?

As a superfood connoisseur myself, when I heard about something called “Cacao Nibs” I had to do some digging. I discovered an article by the Huffington Post that stated cacao nibs, which are cacao beans that have been roasted and broken into smaller pieces, have crazy health benefits that make them better for you than dark chocolate.

The following is a quick summary of a few health benefits from the article:

“Magnesium: Cacao beans are one of the best dietary sources of magnesium. It’s important for muscle and nerve function and keeps the heart rhythm steady.

Fiber: You don’t get any dietary fiber when you eat chocolate, but you do when you snack on cacao nibs: one ounce has nine gram.

Iron: It is necessary for red blood cell production, is found in cacao nibs.

Antioxidants: There is an antioxidant power of dark chocolate — well, that goes even more for cacao beans, especially when eaten raw. Antioxidants are important for health because they absorb the free radicals that cause damage in the body.

Mood Improver: Cacao stimulates the brain to release particular neurotransmitters that can trigger emotions — including good ones like euphoria.

Phenylethylamine (PEA): This is a chemical found in cacao, one that our bodies also make naturally. We produce PEA, an adrenal-related chemical, when we’re excited — it causes the pulse to quicken, making us feel focused and alert.”

If you would like to read the whole article feel from to check it out here.

After discovering the health benefits I decided these nibs are worth adding to any diet. I am going to share my own smoothie recipe that includes these little health boosters. This smoothie is one you can make easily in any college apartment by keeping fruit in the fridge, a few pantry items on the shelf and a blender on the counter.

What you need:

  • Raw Cacao nibs (small handful)
  • Chia Seeds (small handful)
  • Goji berries (small handful)
  • Lemon (half squeezed)
  • Spinach (Handful)
  • Banana (one)
  • Strawberries (4-6)
  • Blackberries (small handful)
  • Raspberries (small handful)
  • Baby carrots (small handful)

I took all these ingredients, put them in my Hamilton Beach single serve blender, blended, popped the top off the blender, added a straw and it was ready to drink. This smoothie is an easy way to put plenty of fruits and veggies in your body plus Cacao nibs. The goji berries, chia seeds and cacao nibs can all be found online here. The blender can be found here and is perfect for any college budget being only $19.99.

Keep cacao nibs in your pantry and add them into a smoothie anytime for those extra health benefits.
