Purdue Nightlife Deals

Well more specifically, Brother’s Bar & Grill nightlife deals. Purdue has a handful of bars open on almost all days of the week so if I talked about all nightlife, that would be a long post.

But for this post, I will give you a run down on the deals Brother’s offers every day of the week. Most importantly, I want to talk about Tuesday’s at Brothers.

A common misconception of most Purdue students is that Wing Wednesday at Brother’s offers the best deal on wings… wrong. It’s actually on Tuesday.

During the week, many Purdue students (myself included) go to Brother’s for the boneless wings and drinks. Well on Wednesday a half pound of wings is $2.50 and a pound is $5.00. Whereas on Tuesday, a half pound of wings is only $2.00 and a pound is $4.00.

Even though most Purdue students are familiarized with “Wing Wednesday”, you should all be taking advantage of the wings on Tuesday!

Coming to Brother’s during the week to enjoy an inexpensive drink and some food is a must for many Purdue students. Students will come to Brother’s as a way to enjoy a late dinner, catch up with friends, or even grab a table and play cards.

If you haven’t yet, take advantage of Brother’s Bar & Grill specials and the boneless wings are a must.

Not interested in wings? They have cheeseburgers, fried pickles, breadsticks, etc. Grab some friends, take a break from studying, and enjoy some awesome weekly deals!


4 ways to deal with looming graduation

“The thought of graduating hadn’t really hit yet because we were all looking forward to Spring Break, but it was on the drive home from break when it really sunk in and became a reality,” said Kerri O’Connor, a senior at Purdue University. “The only thing left that’s coming up now is graduation. It creeped up so fast and is a very scary thought.”

I am similar to Kerri in the fact that I am a Purdue senior as well. The thought of leaving Purdue IS a very scary notion. I sat down and talked to her about how prior to spring break it was easy to put graduation out of your mind, but now that break is over it’s become quite daunting. I wanted to list a few fears her and I shared that, if you’re a graduating senior, you might share too and a few ways to cope with them.

1. School work seems irrelevant.

This might seem true because you already have a job lined up or it’s the end of the year and you would rather spend your last few weeks hanging with friends instead of hanging in the library.

Either way, dealing with a major lack of motivation is difficult. The best way to deal with this is to set aside a few hours each week to be completely disconnected from your phone, tv, friends, etc. and only zone in on academics.

If you know you need to accomplish something but don’t have motivation, it might take you all day to complete one assignment. I know I have been there and it is a waste of the short amount of time you have left on campus.

If you calculate how many hours you’ll need to complete your tasks for the week, then plan out that uninterrupted time. It could be an hour or two everyday or one full day committed to work. If you begin to focus your time, you’ll have plenty of time left over to enjoy the last few weeks left.

2. Graduation will happen before you had enough time here.

Make a college bucket list and plan it into your schedule. This will ensure that you completed everything you wanted to do before your time runs out.

Do not let yourself graduate if you’ve always wanted to do ‘The Great Indoorsman‘ but you just never made time for it. Do not let yourself graduate with any regrets.

3. The close connections made in the last 4 years will be forgotten after graduation. 

Start fitting in time now with the people you care about the most. Schedule drinks or an ice cream date with the people you want to remain friends with post graduation.

If you cannot make time for each other when you’re only (at most) a mile apart, then you won’t make time for each other when you move to different states. Taking that time for one another now will help you put aside time for each other later in life.

4. I am going to take the wrong “next step”.

Believe me, the majority of your peers have no idea if the job they’ve chosen is the correct next step to take in their life. The key is to search for opportunities and just pick the one that feels the most ‘right’. If it’s not what you want and you find out that you aren’t happy, you will find something else.

Now is the time to leap out of the college nest and (attempt to) fly. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Believe it or not, your life will pan out. There is no such thing as a ‘right’ next step, only to make whatever decision you believe is best. Trust your gut.


I am definitely feeling every single one of these fears with graduation creeping up. College has been an incredible and unique experience. If you are anything like myself or Kerri and you share these graduation fears, then I’m hoping this post will help you. You should allow yourself not to fear choosing a job after graduation, whether you know if that’s what you want to do or not. You won’t let yourself lose ties with the ones you’ve grown to care about the most. You won’t let your grades slip in the last few weeks because it is important to finish out college strong, and lastly, you will experience graduation day without any regrets or missed out opportunities.

Goat Cheese Pineapple Bites

Well it’s back to reality after spring break, which also means getting back into a normal and healthy routine. I wanted to share a perfect mid week snack that incorporates french bread, olive oil, goat cheese, and pineapple. I know it sounds kind of weird, but trust me it’s delicious. My roommates were complete skeptics but now I’ve got them hooked so I’m sure I’ll have you hooked too.

You probably didn’t know that French bread has some awesome health benefits. It contain Folate, which is needed for the normal growth of new cells in the body, including red blood cells. Folate removes homocysteine from your blood and high levels of homocysteine are associated with cardiovascular disease. One piece of french bread has 37 percent of an adult’s recommended daily intake of folate.

One piece of French bread also has 13 percent of a woman’s and 29 percent of a man’s daily intake of iron. This element produces white blood cells, works as an antioxidant for the immune system, and helps carry oxygen throughout the body. Also found in French bread is Selenium. On slice will give you 31 percent of your recommended daily intake. Selenium aids blood vessel function as well as assists thyroid hormone production.

Olive oil is incredible for the body. It contains plenty of monounsaturated fats, which are believed to reduce inflammation and may have beneficial effects on genes connected to cancer.  Olive oil contains Vitamins E and K as well as plenty of antioxidants. These antioxidants keep cholesterol in the blood from becoming oxidized (this is what causes the build up in the arty walls and leads to heart disease). I’ve mentioned how it reduces inflammation, but that is super important because chronic inflammation can lead to cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and Alzheimer’s.
A large review study that included over 841,000 subjects found that olive oil was the only source of monounsaturated fat associated with a reduced risk of stroke and heart disease. You can read more about the study here.
Also, olive oil can kill harmful bacteria. One of these bacteria lives in the stomach and causes stomach ulcers and stomach cancer. Studies have shown olive oil to be effective against eight different strains of this bacteria and three of them are resistant to antibiotics. You can read more about the study here.
How about goat cheese? It is rich in vitamin A, B, D, riboflavin, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium.
Lastly, let’s talk about pineapple. It supports the immune system because it contains 50 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C. It also contains plenty of manganese which is essential to strong bone and connective tissue development according to the Linus Pauling Institute. Unlike many other fruits and veggies, pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that breaks down protein, aiding digestion, according to the American Cancer Society. Also, pineapple’s bromelain may help reduce mucus in the throat and nose, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.
All of these incredible health benefits have been incorporated into a delicious recipe that you can make any time during the week as a study snack.

I bought all four items at the local Walmart on Northwestern Ave in West Lafayette:

  • Loaf of French Bread – $1.00
  • Olive Oil  – $5.44
  • Goat Cheese – $3.98
  • Pineapple Rings – $1.16

Once you have all the ingredients, it’s time to make goat cheese pineapple bites.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Step 2: Lay out desired amount of bread slices and drizzle with olive oil

Step 4: Place on cooking sheet at cook at 350 degrees for 5 minutes

Mental Break

And so today begins spring break! To me, spring break is a time to step away from school and the stress that comes with it. Break is a time to reflect, relax, and get out of the 30 degree weather we’ve been having at Purdue and trade it in for 70 and sunny. I’m going to soak up ( much needed ) Vitamin D and spend quality time with my friends. With a week off for spring break that also means a week off from blogging. But don’t worry, I have a list of three books for you to check out. These are great no matter where you’re going or what you’re doing this spring break.

Whether you’re traveling, staying at home, relaxing or working, a good book on the beach or at the end of the day is something we can all appreciate. They can be entertaining, motivating, inspiring or simply a break from reality. I’ve chosen books that will hopefully rejuvenate and inspire your mind, that way you can come back from spring break feeling refreshed and ready to take on the end of the semester.

Add a little excitement to your college schedule

It wasn’t until my senior year that I discovered this article from the Purdue exponent about some of the really unique and fun classes Purdue has to offer.

This was unlucky for me, because it was too late to fit something fun in my schedule like Bowling ( I love to bowl), but lucky for you because hopefully it isn’t too late and you can fit something more exciting into your schedule. Or if you just need to fill your schedule with another elective, instead of taking an easy online class, you can opt for something you can look forward to.

The exponent article inspired me to look a little deeper and find a few more unique classes Purdue has to offer.

Let’s take a look at 10 classes:

AMST 20100 – Interpreting America

Credit Hours: 3.00. Introduction to the interdisciplinary study of American culture, history, and society in its national and global contexts.

They offer a version of it called, “Sports and Technology” where you learn about the equipment used in different sports, sports doping, and interview students on their perspective on sports. This class wasn’t on the exponents list of fun classes but I have personally taken it and loved it.

DANC 25000 – Dance Appreciation

Credit Hours: 3.00. Understanding and appreciation of dance as an art form. Topics include compositional forms; movement styles; elements of dance; and influential choreographers, dancers, and theorists representative of various historical periods and aesthetic points of view. 

EAPS 10600 – Geosciences In The Cinema

Credit Hours: 3.00. An introduction to earth and atmospheric sciences based on depictions in popular and documentary cinema. Topics will include: earthquakes, volcanoes, severe weather, dinosaurs, climate change, evolution, meteor impacts, and earth’s interior. Lectures will focus on discussion of the relevant science, separating fact from fiction, and disaster management. Assignments will consist of viewing of films and answering questions about the science contained therein.

EAPS 13800 – Thunderstorms And Tornadoes

Credit Hours: 3.00. Not open to juniors and seniors majoring in atmospheric science. An elementary treatment of the physical structure of the atmosphere and the dynamical conditions that lead to the development of convective clouds, thunderstorms, and severe weather (including tornadoes, hail, wind, rain, lightning, and flash floods). This course will also focus on storm climatology, the socioeconomic impact of severe weather, as well as prediction, detection, warnings, and safety procedures. Analysis of severe weather events will include tornado movies and case studies of ground/aerial surveys of storm damage.

FS 47000 – Wine Appreciation

Credit Hours: 3.00. A study of wine production and marketing principles with an emphasis upon consumption responsibility. Historical perspectives form the foundations for wine classification systems and traditional serving procedures. Cardinal scale sensory evaluations are conducted in relationship to various food pairings. Must be 21 years of age or older to register for this course. Permission of department required.

HIST 37100 – Society, Culture, And Rock And Roll

Credit Hours: 3.00. Surveys American society and culture through the prism of rock and roll music. Looks at politics, gender, race, and class in the postwar era to examine and explain the social, economic, and technological forces that shaped rock and roll. 

HORT 36000 – Flower Arrangement And Indoor Plant Management

Credit Hours: 3.00. Principles of flower arrangements and displays. Identification, culture, propagation, and use of plants for indoor plantings.

PES 11200 – Aquatic Movement Forms

Credit Hours: 1.00. Instruction and practice in aquatic movement forms. Students select from the activities listed in the current schedule of classes. Following is a partial list of activities: beginning swimming; intermediate swimming; advanced swimming; synchronized swimming.

PES 11400 – Exercise And Conditioning

Credit Hours: 1.00. Instruction and practice in various types of exercise programs. Students select from the activities listed in the current schedule of classes. Following is a partial list of activities: body conditioning; exercise and fitness; exercise to music; jogging and running; relaxation techniques; weight training; exercise and principles of weight control. 

PES 11500 – Individual And Dual Movement Forms I

Credit Hours: 1.00. Instruction and practice in individual and dual movement forms conducted in an indoor setting. Students select from the activities listed in the current schedule of classes. Following is a partial list of activities: badminton; billiards; bowling; fencing; judo; karate; beginning gymnastics; intermediate gymnastics; squash; racquetball; yoga; kung fu; personal defense.

PES 11800 – Horseback Riding

Credit Hours: 1.00. Instruction and practice in hunter seat equitation. Class meets off campus, and students are expected to provide their own transportation. Following is a partial list of offerings: beginning; intermediate; advanced; combined training.


Personally, I wish someone had showed me this list of classes before I was nearing the end of graduation road but hopefully it’s not too late for you. With fall registration coming up, maybe this list will help you take something fun that interests you.

“It hasn’t been a great week for the two accountants involved in f-ing up the Oscars”

According to that quote, two accountants ruined the Oscars. To me, that is very dramatic.

In case you did not know, the Oscars took place on February 26, 2017. There was a small mishap where the wrong name was called but then it was corrected. The wrong envelop was read aloud and LaLa Land was called for Best Picture instead of Moonlight. The mistake was corrected within a matter of minutes and although it was an awkward mistake, in my opinion, the night was not ruined. It was not a disaster or devastating night like many news articles are making it out to be.

It hasn’t been a great week for the two accountants involved in f-ing up the Oscars. And now, it’s about to get worst. The Academy’s president Cheryl Boone Issacs told the Associated Press yesterday that Brian Cullinan and Martha Ruiz will not be receiving an invitation to next year’s ceremony. Ouch. Brian is being blamed for the mix-up after photos emerged of the him taking pictures of Emma Stone when he was supposed to be checking the envelopes. Not a great look. Fired by the Academy: Accountants will NOT be back at the Oscars as new photos show Brian juggling multiple envelopes AND his phone while gawking at Emma Stone” – The Daily Mail.

Brian handed the incorrect envelop off to Warren Beatty. When the wrong Best Picture winner was announced, Brian was tweeting out a photo of Emma Stone instead of paying attention.

Is social media to blame? Maybe we are all too consumed constantly.

Was it just a mistake that should be forgiven? No one is perfect and accidents happen.

Or was Cullinan simply too consumed in himself that he was negligent in his job?

Honestly, I believe it is a little bit of everything. We are told to constantly be connected. That is what the media teaches us. Half the time there are hashtags at the bottom of the screen during shows incase you decide to tweet out something. Cullinan was just doing as everyone else probably was, tweeting and instagramming photos during the event. But even so, Cullinan had a job to do and he should have known to stay off his phone and paid closer attention to what envelop he was handing off. At the end of the day it was a mistake I’m sure he would love to take back and he would never let happen again.

It is a little aggressive to call him out for “gawking” at Emma Stone when was tweeting photos of plenty of different celebrities throughout the night. However he failed at the task required of him and I do believe he should have lost his job. I believe Martha Ruiz was caught in the cross fire and did not deserve to lose her job over someone else’s mistake.

Just in time for Spring Break

You might have seen last week on Instagram that we discussed the importance of exercise. If not, you should know that exercise boosts our brain power, gives us energy and melts away stress. If you have been skipping your workout because you’re bored with Purdue’s CoRec or running out of workout ideas, then maybe you should try out Tenley Studio in Lafayette.

If you have tried it already and used your first free class but didn’t continue going because of the cost.. today is your lucky day. They are having a Spring Break Special. If you haven’t used your first free class, give it a try. If you love it, make sure to snatch up this spring break special before it ends on March 12, 2017.

Typically, their ‘All Class Pack’ which included Barre, Yoga, TKO, Ballet, and Cardio + Core pricing is $95 ($19/class) for 5 classes or $180 ($18/class) for 10 classes. I understand this is a steep cost. Luckily with the special they’re running, classes are only $45 for 5 classes or $90 for 10 classes.

Also, you have an entire year to use up the classes you buy. Even if you can’t fit them in before spring break, there’s plenty of time to go in and workout whenever you please.

  • Ballet
    • Here at Tenley Studio, we are the only place in town that offers exclusive ballet classes specifically designed for adults. The class is technically structured and focuses on the fundamentals of classical ballet. It will teach you proper body alignment, and help strengthen muscle control, which will improve coordination and posture. You will develop body awareness, better range of motion, and an increase in flexibility, all of which will aide in injury prevention. In addition, you will strengthen cognitive performance and reaction times, making it a useful tool for your everyday wellness. There is no strain or struggle in the postures in this class, rather the focus is on relaxation and meditation. Leave this class feeling relaxed and energized!
    • Cardio Yoga- This class uses the proper alignment, breathing and consciousness that accompany yoga with the added resistance of weights and with short bursts of cardio intervals. Torch calories, sculpt and tone your body. This class is a great option for the seasoned yogi, or the beginner!

Tenley is a great workout option in the West Lafayette/ Lafayette area if you are looking for something new. I took advantage of this spring break special as soon as I heard about it so I knew I had to share.
